Polling for casual election held peacefully

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Polling for the casual election to five seats in as many local bodies went off peacefully in Virudhunagar district on Monday.

In the lone urban seat to fill the post of councillor of ward 26 in Srivilliputtur municipality, 72.86 per cent of voters turned up.

Out of the 1,658 voters, 1,208 electorates exercised their franchise, an official statement said.

The turn-up of voters in rural areas was higher with 80.19 per cent of 5,612 voters casting their votes.

The polling was held to elect one ward member in each of Amanakkunatham, Thoppalakarai panchayats and to elect panchayat presidents of Thambipatti and Vijayakarisalkulam.
