Checking wastage:Residents of Vaipaar village submit petition to Collector in Tuticorin on Monday.

Tuticorin: The residents of Vaipaar, attached to Vilathikulam Panchayat Union, congregated at the Collectorate here on Monday demanding the intervention of the district administration for constructing a check dam across the river Vaipaar.

Since there was rampant sand mining on the river bed of Vaipaar, the intrusion of coastal waters into the river was unabated.

In the recent rainfall, the rain water reached the top-level and overflowed into the sea.

Hence the excess flow of water should be stored and preserved to meet the basic requirements of the villagers here.

At times of acute shortage of drinking water, the preserved water would be of immense help to the people. Therefore, the authorities should consider the demand for establishing a check dam, M. Shenbagaperumal, the village president, said. A petition was also submitted to the Collector to fulfil the demand at the earliest.
