St. Berchmans award presented to T.V. Muralivallabhan

‘Lure of quick money attracting youth to IT sector'

Role of teachers in shaping the future of youth stressed

CHANGANASSERY: The former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), G. Madhavan Nair, has urged the youth to give priority to the development of indigenous technology.

He was the chief guest during a presentation ceremony of the St. Berchman's award held at the Archbishop Kavukattu Hall of St. Berchman's College on Monday.

Dr. Nair stressed the need for attaining self-sufficiency in such domestic advancements. “The increasing prominence of the Information Technology (IT) industry has led to considerable surge in the Indian economy. However, on the flipside, the lure of quick money has led to a scenario in which a majority of youth getting sucked by the industry. This alarming trend has hindered the development of individual inner talents and potential,'' he said.

‘‘The future of the country lies in the hands of the youth. They should strive towards improving the conditions of the needy. The younger generation should persevere towards reducing an excessive dependence on western technology. They should try and breakaway from the clutches of the IT industry. Attempts in similar direction will auger well for the nation that is bounded by several problems,” he said.

He elaborated on the role of teachers in shaping the future of the youth. “Students should be moulded to think laterally and identify their own individual career paths that would help them achieve worthwhile results in their pursuit for attaining their dreams. Teachers should refrain from spoon-feeding their students, he said.

He, later, conferred the St. Berchmans award 2010 on T.V. Muralivallabhan, Associate Professor of Economics, SVRNSS College, Vazhoor.

In his reply, Dr. Muralivallabhan owed his success to his family and mentors who had played significant roles in motivating him towards selfless dedication in the field of teaching.

Mar Thoma Syrian Church Senior Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostom delivered the keynote address on the occasion.

College manager Joseph Naduvilezham; Tomy Padinjareveetil, Principal; K.J. Mathew, IPS, president of the S.B. Alumni Association; and S.B. Award Committee secretary George Thomas also spoke.
