‘Pupy' bags a national award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Children's animation film from Kerala ‘Pupy 2' won the Golden Beaver Award for best animation film at the National Science Film Festival organised in connection with the Indian Science Congress at Chennai recently.

‘Ants all around us,' a video film produced by the State Institute of Educational Technology (SIET) and directed by Suresh Elamon, bagged the Silver Beaver Award for the second best science short-film.

SIET's ‘Butterflies,' also directed by Mr. Elamon, bagged the Bronze Beaver Award at the festival in the popular science film category.

Produced and created by the Thiruvananthapuram-based Hibiscus Digital Media, ‘Pupy 2' is a science education film for children, which conveys basic scientific principles through the animated puppy Pupy, a statement released here said.

Hibiscus Digital Media managing director and director of ‘Pupy 2' Madhu K.S., SIET Director Babu Sebastian and Mr. Elamon received the awards from film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan at a function held at Chennai recently.

The Golden Beaver award carries a citation and cash award of Rs.50,000. The Silver Beaver Award carries a purse of Rs.30,000 and the Bronze Beaver award Rs.20,000. Fifty-eight films were screened at the competition section of the festival.

Another short-film produced by SIET and directed by Mr. Elamon titled ‘Birds and their homes' was also screened at the Panorama section of the festival. SIET could produce 30 national-award winning films in the last five years, Mr. Sebastian said in the statement.

‘Pupy 2' had also received special mention by the jury at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala in 2010.

The first part of the animation film ‘Pupy I' had bagged the State television award for best children's television programme in 2006 besides awards for best film, director, animation and editing at the National Educational Film Festival organised by NCERT.
