Udhagamandalam: Cultural competitions for self-help groups organised under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation here on Tuesday reflected the increasing interest among the members of the groups in various challenges confronting the World and concern for social issues.

Themes

Speaking to The Hindu, one of the judges V.Azhagar Ramanujam said that unlike the competitions in the past, this year the participants chose themes which were of current interest.

Rangoli

Pointing out that the rangoli competition was of particular interest, he said that since all the participants had done well, the task of picking the winners had been made unenviable.

Among other things, the participants in the cultural competitions had portrayed themes such as degradation of the environment on account of deforestation, global warming, national integration, unity of religions and the consequences of putting up constructions in ecologically-sensitive places.

Even in the elocution competitions, the views expressed by many of the participants were thought provoking.

Prizes

The Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, the Nilgiris, V.Muniasamy, said that groups which had bagged the first three prizes in the elocution, rangoli, dance and singing competitions held last month in Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur blocks had participated in the district-level competitions.

Cash prizes were distributed to those who had excelled in the competitions by the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik.

The former Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, C.K.Gariyali, was among those present.

The winners: Elocution: Malai Magal SHG, Jakkanarai, Kotagiri. Rangoli: TLF, Mel Kundah. Dance: Gracy SHG, Gudalur. Singing: Indira SHG, Coonoor.
