THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet has given the go-ahead for publishing the new below poverty line (BPL) list which consists of 32,29,823 families.
Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohamed Kutty said here on Wednesday that the poverty line census, on the basis of which the list was prepared, was conducted with the help of teachers in April-May 2009.
The census had covered 76,12,343 families in all — 64,37,209 rural and 11,75,093 urban.
The categories excluded from the census were government, quasi-government, aided, cooperative and other service pensioners, employees of public and private sector institutions, those who owned concrete residences of 1,000 sq ft area, families of those working abroad and families other than tribal families which owned over one acre of cultivable land. Around 37 lakh families were thus excluded.
The present list was prepared from the remaining 38,79,057 families by giving weightage for clearly laid down factors. The number of urban families in the list was 4.73 lakh and Scheduled Community families, 6.98 lakh.
The number of BPL families in lakhs in each district as per the new list is as follows: Thiruvananthapuram - 3.99; Kollam - 3.1; Pathanamthitta - 1.14; Alappuzha - 2.56; Kottayam - 1.93; Idukki - 1.53; Ernakulam - 2.62; Thrissur -2.94; Palakkad - 3.02; Malappuram - 2.92; Kozhikode - 2.55; Wayanad - 1.07; Kannur - 1.82 and Kasaragod - 1.11.
