Graceful folk dances steal the show at Youth Day

12 performances enthral audience in Mangalore



FOLK FLAVOUR:Boys performing Karangol dance at the Youth Day function in Mangalore on Wednesday.

MANGALORE: Wolf whistles and claps greeted a group of five girls as they danced to a Tulu folk song about local mythological character Siri, during the National Youth Day celebrations here on Wednesday.

Twelve folk culture performances enthralled the audience in Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Chaitanya Mitra Mandali and Karavali Yuvaka Vrinda performed dances. Karangol dance, which featured at the function, is connected with agriculture and was performed by a group of boys.

The smell of crushed leaves enveloped the people sitting in the first two rows as the boys waved the leaves. One group of Halaki Kunita performers were uncomfortable as their musicians were delayed. It is a dance form from Ankola.

The programme was organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra, the National Service Scheme, Mangalore University, and Sri Mahalingeshwara Daya Friends Circle.

The event was inaugurated by Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

There were two lectures on the youth and folk culture by Brahmakumari Usha Rajayogini and artist Dinesh Holla in the morning.

Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:

Members of the district unit of Campus Front of India took out a jatha to mark National Youth Day in Udupi on Wednesday. The birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda is celebrated as National Youth Day. The jatha, which began from MGM College, passed through Kadiyali, Kalsank, City Bus Stand and Service Bus Stand, and culminated at the Saraswati School here. According to the president of the unit, Asif Baikady, Swami Vivekananda was a model for the youth. He had emphasised on the role of the youth in nation building. His thoughts had left a mark not only in the country but also the world.

Secretary of the unit Imran Yermal and Joint Secretary Farook Honnala were among those who took part in the jatha.
