Fix norms, Corporation told

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association has urged the City Corporation to drop the move to levy professional tax on lawyers without ascertaining their income.

A press note quoting association president C.K. Sitaram said here on Wednesday that the arbitrary decision (to collect professional tax from lawyers without assessing their income) was unjustifiable. “A majority of lawyers in the Thiruvananthapuram Bar are juniors without their own office or a handsome income. Very few among those considered senior by their tenure also do not have a steady practice and good income. Many have even given up practice,” it said.

“In the absence of steady income, lawyers have to be classified into different categories based on their earnings from the profession and tax fixed accordingly.

Instead, Revenue officials from the Corporation are indiscriminately issuing notice to all lawyers,” the note said. Mr. Sitaram urged the Mayor to withdraw the notices issued.
