MADURAI: Kadambavanam, a cultural centre and ethnic resort near Parali off Natham Road — about 25 km from the city — is organising Pongal celebration in the traditional way in an an authentic rural setting. The four-day festivity is being showcased in a half-day capsule, presented in a colourful mela on January 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to its Managing Director Chitra Ganapathy, a variety of events have been planned for the visiting guests. ‘Thai' Pongal, the first day of the auspicious month of Thai, is the harvest festival and celebrated as a thanksgiving to the Sun God. It is also the official Tamil new year day, which adds to the significance. The relevance of the festivities to the Tamil culture would be narrated to the guests in an interesting story telling manner. People from neighbouring villages would participate in the events in a big way to make the guests feel the native warmth. The organisers have planned bullock cart ride, ‘themmangu paattu' shop at the kadai theru (bazaar) for curio and parai drums, classical dance and kolattam.
