Thai Poosam festival commences in Palani

Staff Reporter

PALANI: With hoisting of temple flag, the 10-day Thai Poosam festival commenced at Sri Periyanaki Amman Temple, popularly known as ‘Oor Kovil,' here on Friday.

At the outset, the aesthetically decorated Lord Sri Muthukumaraswamy along with Goddesses Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai were brought to the Kodikatti mandapam in the temple for the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Initially, the ceremony commenced with Sri Vinayagar puja. After a special yaham, abishekam was performed to golden dwajasthambam (flag-post). Special pujas and deeparadhanai were also performed to it.

At an auspicious time, chief gurukkal hoisted the holy flag with images of peacock, cock, holy lance, arrow and bow, His popular weapons, on the dwajasthambam.

Later, Lord Muthukumaraswamy and the two Goddesses were mounted on Pudhucherry Sapparam and taken out in a procession around the temple.

Joint Commissioner of HR&CE, T. Rajanmanicakam, other officials and pilgrims took part in it.

Celestial wedding

The Thirukkalyanam (celestial wedding) of Lord Muthukumaraswamy with the Goddess Sri Valli will take place on January 19. After marriage, the Lord and the Goddesses would travel on silver rath at Perianayaki Amman Temple. The holy car procession will take place at 4.30 p.m. on January 20 and the float festival between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m., on January 23.

The Lord would be taken out in a procession on various mounts during the 10-day festival in the morning and evening.

The temple administration has arranged cultural programmes in all the 10 days at Kuda Muzhakku Mandapam near Palani Malai Adivaram.
