Bicycle rally organised to motivate youth to join Territorial Army

With a mission: Members of the 117 Infantry Battalion Territorial Army pedalling through the rural areas of Namakkal district on Friday.

Namakkal: Cyclists from the 117 Infantry Battalion Territorial Army based at Trichy who are on a month-long pedalling trip across the State with the mission of motivating youngsters to join the Territorial Army, reached Namakkal on Friday night. They started off to Perambalur on Saturday morning.

Team

Junior Commissioned Officer T. Ganesan (44), who is at other times a cooperative bank staff, led the team of nine members aged between 27 and 43 years, who started off from their battalion head quarters on the third of this month.

“We have been covering an average of 120 kilometres a day creating awareness among youth and motivating them to join TA,” he said.

Before reaching Namakkal, the team pedalled across Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Puducherry, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Mettur and Erode districts.

The team plans to cover nearly 3,000 kilometres across the State in two phases.

The first phase of 1,500 kilometres in 12 days is expected to conclude at Trichy on Saturday. During the second phase from January 20 to 31, they would be covering an equal distance in the Southern part of the State.

Mr. Ganesan said that so far they have created awareness on TA among nearly 4,000 youth at schools and colleges in addition to village youth.

In Namakkal they interacted with nearly 300 students of Bharath Polytechnic and Sengunthar Arts College where they explained the functioning of TA, how to apply and join, qualification, age limit and the selection process.

“We also actively involved ourselves in an anti plastic campaign, prevention of pollution and cutting of trees, water conservation and road safety awareness,” he added.

The cycle rally is organized for the first time as part of the Trichy battalion's Golden Jubilee Raising Day celebration in 2010.

Districts

The Trichy unit covers 12 districts including Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Ramnad, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Namakkal, Karur and Virudhunagar.

TA is open to persons aged between 18 and 42 years who be recruited as an Officer (graduates) Junior Commissioned Officer (persons with NCC ‘C' certificate) and Sepoy (pass in 10 {+t} {+h} standard whereas there is relaxation for special cases).
