St. Sebastian's fete gets to a start in Kollam

New light:Chemakad parish priest Fr. Jose Sebastian lighting a giant candle to mark the commencement of the annual Saint Sebastian's feast of the parish church on Sunday.

KOLLAM: Instead of the traditional flag hoisting, a candle standing 12 ft and 1 ft in circumference was lit to mark the inaugural of the eight-day Saint Sebastian's festival at the Chemakad parish church here on Sunday evening. Parish priest Fr. Jose Sebastian lit the candle from a specially-erected podium.

Vision 2020

The candle was lit to spread awareness of the Vision 2020 scheme of the Catholic Church which envisages houses to all members of the community by 2020. The decision was taken by the parish committee so to spread awareness on Vision 2020 in a unique way.

The candle was made by Lijo Cleetus. Parish committee member Biju George said that the candle would remain lit till the wick is over. After the lighting of the candle, the traditional procession bearing the festival flag was held and Rev. Sebastian later hoisted the flag.
