Tiruchi
raiding for glory:The victorious Thottiyam block kabbadi team members. TIRUCHI: It was time for some kabaddi action at the Anna Stadium here. The Tiruchi-unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) organised ‘Samathuva Pongal' kabaddi tournament which saw participation of men's and women's teams from various blocks in the district recently. There was fun and thrill galore even as players relished the competitive challenge. Twelve teams in the men's section and 10 in the women's category took part in the tourney. The teams qualified for the district-level tournament after emerging winners from their respective blocks. “The tournament is conducted with the idea of promoting kabaddi. As always the response was good and the matches also lived up to the expectations,” said P. Kalaiselvan, District Sport Officer. After overcoming stiff challenges, Thottiyam and Lalgudi blocks won the men's and women's titles respectively. “Based on their performance in the tournament, players will be chosen to represent Tiruchi district in the State-level tournament to be held soon,” Mr. Kalaiselvan added. Speaking at the valediction, R. Mohan, former General Manager, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, said the tournament provided an opportunity for rural youth to exhibit their talents. “The spirit of participation was more important than winning,” he added. Mr. Mohan gave away the prizes in the presence of N. Annavi, former international high jumper, and S. Gajarajan, secretary, Tiruchi District Kabaddi Association.
