Abolish contract labour system, says INTUC State general secretary Controlling price of essential commodities one of the demands VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) along with all major trade unions in the country, will stage a dharna in front of the Parliament session on February 23 to press for pending demands. Addressing a media conference here on Sunday, INTUC State general secretary K.S. Mohan Kumar said that the decision to this effect was taken after earlier agitations since 2009 had failed to evoke any positive response from the Government. The INTUC appreciated the stable government provided by the UPA with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the helm, and the decision to take action on some Chief Ministers facing allegations of corruption, he said. Issues However, there were issues to be addressed like the revision of Bonus Act. “The Supreme Court had ruled that the workers are social partners in industry which reaped profits due to their toil to the tune of Rs.8,000 crores to Rs.9,000 crores. But only Rs.800 is paid as bonus calculated at 20 per cent on a ceiling of Rs.3,500 which is not justifiable. We demand that the ceiling be lifted to extend the benefit to the worker,” he said. Dr. Kumar also demanded that the contract labour system be abolished. Other demands of INTUC include controlling prices of essential commodities and curbing inflation, implementation of labour laws, stopping disinvestment in profit-making units, and social security for unorganised sector workers. INTUC leaders Mantri Rajasekhar, Gadasala Apparao, KVN Raju, K. Eswara Rao, Y. Mastanappa, Parupudi Ravi and others were present.
