JAIPUR: As part of its skill development agenda, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has adopted 43 government industrial training institutes (ITIs) in Rajasthan to convert them into the centres of excellence. The ITIs have started working faster after the signing of memorandums of understanding. CII State Council chairman Rohit Saboo said here on Monday that the industrial conglomerate has taken up the task as an “important agenda” under its social commitment and decided to adopt as many ITIs as possible this year. The CII has established a panel on human resources and education for the purpose. The Union Government had announced the scheme for adoption of the ITIs by industry in 2007, following which the CII's panel has been raising the issues faced by industry members which embraced the ITIs earlier, and helping more CII members adopt the institutions. Mr. Saboo said the CII had turned the limelight on skill development to align the industry's manpower needs with the initiatives for improving skills and employability of the working population, including school dropouts and unskilled and semi-skilled workers. “ITI adoption is under way to create a new wave of skilled manpower for serving the needs of industries and entrepreneurship and further employment generation,” said Mr. Saboo, while pointing out that making the workforce efficient will help the industry flourish and become more competitive across all sectors of the economy. Some typical challenges that render skill development an urgent need in the country include large-scale unplanned rural to urban migration causing urban poverty and slum dwellings proliferation, excessive high-school dropout rate, high instances of poverty and 90 per cent of the workforce being in the unorganised sector, numbering 38.37 crore in 2001. The CII members in the State which have adopted the ITIs include the Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited, Tirupati Gems, Dynamic Engineers, ACC Cement, Hotel Clarks Amer, Associated Soapstone, Qualitech Metal Industries, R.S. Power System and Achint Chemicals.
