Handicrafts artisans seek reservation

PUDUKOTTAI: The All India handicrafts artisans' welfare association has urged the State government to introduce reservation in government jobs for the artisans .
A resolution adopted at its consultative meeting held at Kandiyanatham village near here, said that the reservation would be a recognition and encouragement for the handicrafts artisans.
The meeting also urged the government to instruct police not to misuse Section 411 of IPC (dishonestly receiving stolen property) against goldsmiths and handicrafts artisans.
Welfare board
The meeting also demanded through another resolution, setting up of a welfare board for the artisans.
Senthil, branch secretary of Koppanapatti unit , presided over the meeting. Ponnusamy, youth wing president and Muthupandi, organising secretary, were among those who spoke.
The following were elected as office-bearers of the association: Perumal, president; Kathiresan, vice-president; Ilango Rathinam, joint secretary; Pazhanisamy, deputy secretary; and Subbiah, treasurer.
