KWA promises to plug leaks in pipelines

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: An inspection to ascertain the number of public water taps in the city will be carried out shortly.

This was decided at a meeting of the officials of the Kerala Water Authority with civic authorities here on Monday. The inspection, to be jointly carried out by the officials of the authority and corporation, will be held within one month.

The decision attains significance in the wake of the dispute between the corporation and the authority regarding the water charge dues of the civic body. The authority had demanded around Rs. 90 crore as water charge arrears. Raising the issue at the meeting, T.J. Vinod, chairman of the Development Standing Committee, said that the number of taps needs to be ascertained.

The authority officials assured the civic representatives that the service of its Blue Brigade will be strengthened for plugging leaks in the water supply pipelines. Many civic representatives pointed out that the huge quantities of drinking water were lost due to the delayed plugging of leaks. Kochi needs 425 million litres of drinking water a day. However, the supply from Aluva pump house is only 225 MLD. Mayor Tony Chammany; Deputy Mayor B. Bhadra; and K.S. Babu, executive engineer of the KWA attended the meeting.
