TTE throws couple out of train; NHRC pulls up Railways
J. Balaji
NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has pulled up the Railways after a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) allegedly threw a couple — Rameshwar Mandal and Malti Devi — out of a moving train for travelling in a reserved coach with a general open ticket.
While Rameshwar Mandal died, Malti Devi sustained serious injuries.
The NHRC, which took up the case suo motu based on media reports, observed that if the reports were true, they raised a serious issue of human rights violation.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Railway Board chairman, the General Railway Police, and Superintendents of Police in Allahabad and Muzaffarpur and sought reports within four weeks.
It has also asked the Board chairman to give details about the ex-gratia paid to the family of the deceased, the status of Malti Devi's injuries, the treatment given to her and the disciplinary action taken against the TTE.
According to reports, the couple, hailing from a village in Bihar's Saharsa district, had a general open ticket from Allahabad to Bhagalpur, but was travelling in a reserved coach of the Swatantra Senani Express on January 5, when the incident took place.
Later, the Muzaffarpur railway police registered an FIR against an unknown TTE.
