ATR introduces restricted trekking
Special Correspondent
Pollachi: As part of the ongoing efforts to promote eco-tourism, the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) authorities have introduced restricted trekking through select routes in the sanctuary.
Talking to The Hindu, ATR Field Director H. Basuvaraju said trekking has been introduced on a trial basis for smaller groups subject to a condition that each group should have five members.
The effort is to restrict mass tourism and encourage regulated restricted tourism enabling the nature lovers to trek through the forests for two to three hours and enjoy nature. Each group would have to remit Rs.100 per person and would be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. These guides would be thorough with the topography of the place, the track and would be able to smell the movement of animals.
Routes
The trekking routes chosen now are four in Top Slip, Amaravathy, Chinna Kallaar in Valparai, Udumalpet ranges. Depending on the response and success of the same, the trekking programme would be regularised and the authorities would consider opening more trekking routes for tourists.
Watch
However, the trekking project would be carefully and closely monitored to ensure that only serious nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers make use of the programme.
