Chavundaraya Award for Kausalya Dharanendraiah

BANGALORE: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat presented the Chavundaraya Endowment Award to 74-year-old writer and poet Kausalya Dharanendraiah here on Wednesday.

Jain writer Jeevendrakumar Hotapete spoke on the life and works of the award winner. Writer Ejazuddin was the chief guest.

President of the Karnataka Jain Association S. Jitendrakumar was present. President of the parishat R.K. Prasad Nallur presided over the function.

The award is generally presented to those who have written in Kannada on the basis of ancient Jain texts and promote Jain philosophy through Kannada literature.

Endowment

The award named after the Ganga dynasty Chief Minister Chavundaraya, who was responsible for installing the historical Bahubali statue atop Shravanabelogola, has been instituted by the Sri Kshetra Shravanabelogola with Rs. 2 lakh endowment with the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

The parishat presents the award annually with the support of the interest accrued on the endowment fund. The award carries Rs. 20,000 in cash, a citation, a shawl and a memento.

Born on May 28, 1937 in Saligrama in Mysore district, Ms. Dharanendraiah is a retired Hindi teacher. She has published plays in Kannada and Hindi on the basis of ancient Jain literature and also translated several works from Hindi into Kannada.

She has received many literary awards, including the Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha's Rathnamma Hegde Award.
