THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Electricity Minister A.K. Balan has said the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will achieve total electrification in 100 Assembly constituencies before the completion of the term of the present government. At a press conference here on Wednesday, he said Thrissur district had already become totally electrified and the formal announcement would be made at a function at Chalakkudy on Saturday. With Palakkad having made this achievement earlier, Thrissur would now become the second district in Kerala with every home receiving electric connection. “No district in any other part of the country has this achievement to its credit, according to my information,” the Minister said. He said very little work was remaining in completing the efforts for total electrification in Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts. These districts would be declared totally electrified on February 19. “Nearly five years ago, when we started looking at the possibility of total electrification of the State, it had looked like an impossible dream. Now it is within the reach. It will be possible to totally electrify all the 140 Assembly constituencies in the next six months or so, if the ongoing efforts are continued,” Mr. Balan said. Gives details He gave details of the electrical installations that had to be put in place and distribution lines that had to be drawn to remote hamlets to take electricity to every home in Thrissur district. It had cost Rs.17.5 crore, of which Rs.8.5 crore was the contribution of the KSEB. The remaining was mobilised from various sources such as the MP Local Area Development Scheme, MLA's fund and the resources of local bodies.
