THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Commercial banks and the district administration of Kollam have taken certain proactive steps to popularise Kisan Credit Cards in the district in the recent months, the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) has said. The SLBC, which monitors the performance of the banks and coordinates their activities with the development departments of the government, recommended that these initiatives be replicated in other districts. The SLBC made this recommendation to the banks and the government authorities in those districts at its latest quarterly meeting here in December. The Lead District Bank of Kollam (Indian Bank), with the assistance of the District Collector, convened an exclusive meeting called “KCC Meet” with the intention of covering all farmers in the district under the Kisan Credit Card Scheme. Describing the initiative, the SLBC said the Agriculture Department, at this meeting, offered assistance to the banks in identifying the farmers who were eligible for the benefits of the scheme and were willing to join it. KCC Melas Subsequent to this meeting, “KCC Melas” were now being conducted in all panchayats. Joint liability groups promoted by the Kudumbasree movement too were now being covered by the scheme in the district. The SLBC said that these initiatives were being given wide publicity by displaying posters at the branches of all banks in rural areas, government offices, panchayat offices and fertilizer dealer shops and at vantage points in the villages. Banks having branches in the district had been given targets in bringing new farmers under the scheme.
