NAGAPATTINAM: A fire rescue and evacuation drill was organised as part of the national-level fire evacuation drill at the Natarajan Damayanthi Higher Secondary School here on Friday.
Ten teams, which included fire evacuation team, first-aid team, search and rescue team, fire-management team, awareness-combining team, fire-alarm team, site-safety team, transport team, media management team, and school fire management committee, were constituted for the mock drill.
Each team comprising six teachers and 10 students was delegated with a specific rescue work.
The deputy fire advisor of the Union Home Ministry had mandated the conduct of the mock drill as a nation-wide exercise in each district headquarters on January 21.
The mock drill that was organised was preceded by two-day training in fire evacuation and rescue.
The evacuation, which commenced with a fire-alarm, and a response time of three minutes was a success. S.Arumugam, Divisional Fire Officer, briefed on the rescue and evacuation methods such as ‘stop-drop-roll' method, lateral opening of door to prevent ‘back draught' — accentuating the ferocity of fire — crawl-method of rescue to avoid smoke , and encircling people to prevent stampede.
Over 2,500 students, 200 teachers, and headmasters participated in the drill that was flagged off by R.Veerachamy, Chief Education Officer.
