MADURAI: Thousands of people took part in the events associated with Madurai Marathon, organised by Dhan Foundation with the theme ‘climate change adaptation,' here on Saturday.

The programme featured ‘run for a cause,' half marathon and a walk by the differently abled. The District Collector, C. Kamaraj, who inaugurated the marathon at Fatima College, underscored the need for educational institutions to involve in action prioritising climate change. The marathon culminated at the Madurai Medical College, where prizes were distributed to the winners of half marathon for men and women. Another ‘run for the cause' started from Teppakulam. About 300 people participated in the differently abled walk at the Race Course.

The participants, who assembled at the Madurai Medical College ground, took a pledge to conserve and save the environment and fight climate change. Gijs Dermeir of Klimaat Change Bureau, The Netherlands, addressed the gathering. Prizes were awarded to winners of half marathon. The first three prizes in the men's category went to K. Dakshinamurthy, C. Sivakumar and V. R. Chellapandi. In the women's section, the winners were N. Manjula, R. Annalakshmi and Divya. Prizes were also awarded to winners of essay, art and elocution competitions, on the theme ‘climate change adaptation.'
