Vested interests working against me, says AMU Vice-Chancellor

Urvashi Sarkar

ALIGARH: Blaming vested interests for putting him “in the dock”, Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis has said that he did not ask the varsity for extra pecuniary benefits. “Nothing has been given to me which my predecessors did not get,” claimed Professor Azis, who is facing a Presidential enquiry for “financial irregularities”. He also expressed unhappiness at “the slow pace of the probe,” saying it should be completed at the earliest.

Admitting that auditors had come up with “minor objections”, the Vice-Chancellor said: “I am sure our finance people will be able to address the objections.”

With regard to widespread student antagonism against him, he said: “This is a rather thin sentiment, and the students have been misled by people and political lobbies who are trying to create trouble for me. If an honest assessment of the work I have done was conducted, these allegations would not have been made.”

Professor Azis said all steps taken by him were first discussed in the executive council, academic council and the AMU court. The AMU students' union (AMUSU) was dissolved by Professor Azis in 2007 after the Vice-Chancellor's lodge was burnt down. Elections to AMUSU were held earlier this week after a prolonged student agitation.

“We were initially planning to restore AMUSU elections in the 2011-12 academic session. However, the students wanted the election procedure to be reinstated as soon as possible,” he said, adding that he was happy to see defunct institution operational once more.

“The AMUSU has a history of producing great thinkers, debaters, academicians and politicians. The newly elected students' union should become partners in the development and expansion of the AMU and bring in a sense of inclusion.”
