Says it has introduced stringent provisions that included arrests without warrants Measures on a war footing necessary on ‘huge shortage' of competent teaching staff PUDUCHERRY: Calling for comprehensive liberalisation of the higher education system in the country, G. Viswanathan, Founder-Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology, on Sunday questioned the attempts of the Central government in fixing the fee structure for private colleges and deemed universities. Reforms needed Addressing a press conference here, he said that rather than introducing liberal reforms that would aid the expansion of higher education in the country, the government was trying to impose more controls on private players which included the effort to regulate the fee structure. Bill Referring to the recently tabled Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical Education Bill that has been referred to a standing committee of Parliament, Mr. Viswanathan said that it has introduced some unnecessary stringent provisions that included arrests without warrants and three-year rigorous imprisonment even for minor offences. Pointing out the “huge shortage” of competent teaching staff in the country, he told reporters that measures on a war footing were necessary on this front if the quality of higher education was to be improved.
