Bawa dethroned

KOLKATA: Defending champion and fifth seeded Haadin Bawa of India was shown the door by Kai Wen Lai of Chinese Taipei in the boys' singles first round of the ONGC-ITF juniors here at DKS Sports complex on Monday.

Bawa looked off-colour from the beginning making it easier for his Chinese Taipei opponent to wrap up the match in just 40 minutes in straight sets.

The only Indian tasting success was unseeded Ritwik Anand who beat Shukrat Gizatulin of Uzbekistan. The rest of the Indians failed to put up a fight and exited in the first round.

In the girls' singles, top seed Napatsakorn Sankaew of Thailand cleaned up lucky loser Sumeera Kamil of India without losing a game.

Unseeded Dhruti Venugopal, who beat Darya Chernetsova of Belarus, joined the sixth-seeded Ratnika Batra and Bhuvna Kalwa to make it three Indians moving into the next round.

Ratnika and Bhuvna beat compatriots Amrita Mukherjee and Spurthi Shivalingaiah in their respective first round matches.
