‘Ensure protection of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes'

Staff Correspondent

Bijapur: Members of various Dalit organisations have appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to take steps to ensure that people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are protected under the law.

Speaking at the district-level SC/ST awareness committee meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday, the members alleged that the benefits of various Government schemes were not reaching people belonging to SC and ST because of the “negligent and lethargic” attitude of the officers concerned.

They demanded that a SC/ST social justice committee be formed in each gram panchayat to ensure that the benefits of the schemes reached the target groups.

“The district administration should conduct workshops every year to inform people about the 22 per cent grants meant for the welfare of SCs/STs,” they said.

The organisations also demanded that the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on the Karnataka State Women's University campus be taken over and cultural activities be held there. The rent paid by the university all these years should be utilised for the welfare of Dalits, they said.

Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanshetty promised to take up the issue with Vice-Chancellor of the university Geeta Bali and the Social Welfare department.

The organisations also alleged that the agencies involved in recruiting teachers to Morarji Desai schools in the district were cutting 25 per cent of their honorarium which had resulted in a lackadaisical attitude among the teachers.
