Suresh Krishna wins

Mysore: South Central Railway's Suresh Krishna came back from behind to register a well earned 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Nithin Kirtane of Western Railway in the men's singles final of the 57th all-India inter-railway tennis championship at the Chamundi courts here on Saturday.

In a evenly contested first set, south-paw Nithin Kirtane and Suresh Krishna matched each other by holding their serves till the fourth game, but in the fifth, Nithin broke his rival's serve with some excellent ground-strokes from the baseline on both the flanks. Suresh fought back to break Nithin's weak service game to level at 3-3. The games went on with serve and in the ninth game, Nithin broke Suresh's serve with some excellent down-the-line winners on both the flanks to take a 5-4 lead. He held his serve to take the first set at 6-4. Suresh Krishna came back fighting in the second set and served and played well to take a 4-2 lead. Nithin fought back and broke his rival's serve and held his own service game to level at 5-5. Suresh held his service game and broke Nithin's serve in the 12th game to take the second set at 7-5.

The final set saw Nithin breaking his rival's serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Suresh started playing his baseline strokes on both the flanks well and combined it well with some deft volleys at the net.

Suresh broke his rival's serve in the 8th game and took a 5-3 lead. Nithin broke back, capitalizing on unforced errors on the forehand to take the ninth game and levelled by holding his serve in the tenth game 5-5. Suresh held his serve in the eleventh game and broke his rival when it mattered, to take the set and the match at 7-5.

Purushotham (SCR) 8-5; P. Ramkumar (SCR) bt S.V. Subramanya (SCR) 8-4. Veteran's Doubles: (45 Plus): Final: K. Purushotham/S.M.V. Issar (SCR) bt V. Hanumantha Rao/S.V.
