BERHAMPUR: A retired school teacher has been allegedly abducted by Maoists in Kandhamal district. Whereabouts of this retired teacher Nargo Subhasundar (65) of Minjapanka village under Brahmanigaon police station limits was not known till Monday evening. Since morning there have been rumours that the aged man may have been killed by the extremists, which has created panic in the minds of villagers of the area. But according to police sources it cannot be confirmed as nobody has been recovered yet. Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, R.K.Sharma said search and combing operation has been initiated in the area by personnel of Special Operation Group (SOG) to locate the missing retired teacher. He added that out of fear or some other reasons the family members of the retired teacher had not reported this alleged abduction till Monday. On Monday afternoon a police team reached the family members of the retired teacher to enquire about his missing. “As per his family members on Thursday a group of three suspicious persons who seemed like Maoists had come to the village and taken away the old man with them. He has gone missing since then. Police is also investing the reason for which Maoists may have abducted the old man. Mr. Sharma said police had started search operation and investigation when gossips started to float about this alleged abduction although the family members of the retired teacher had not filed any police complaint. It may be noted that in recent past Maoists are trying to increase their base in Kandhamal district through their acts of violence and terror. On January 4 Moaists had shot dead a trader of forest produce at Bhramarbari village under Daringbadi block. On November 25 evening the ultras had shot dead a construction contractor Manoj Sahu at a crowded market at Brahmanigaon of this block. A landmine blast by Maoists killed five civilians including two women and a girl travelling in an ambulance near Brahmanigaon on November 27 night. In the past violent acts by Maoists has destroyed fragile peace in the district. Murder of VHP leader Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates in August 2008 by Maoists had triggered off large scale communal violence in the district.
