IN REMEMBRANCE: Subramanian Swamy, MP, delivering the keynote address at the Sathyavrathan commemorative meeting and media seminar in Kochi on Monday. KOCHI: India as a country will be destroyed if corrupt persons are not punished, said Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy. Delivering a lecture here on Monday at a function organised by the International Media Centre, Dr. Swami said many great civilizations such as Greece and Rome were destroyed due to corruption. The meeting was organised by the Centre in connection with death anniversary of veteran journalist N.N. Sathyavrithan. Greed has become the driving force in the country and greed leads to corruption. India has changed from a slow progressing socialist model society to a fastest growing economy where pure materialism based on greed prevails. The number of billionaires was growing in the country but they were not doing anything for society .Hardly any industrialist diverts a portion of his profit for the welfare of society. The philanthropic contributions of the industrialists were also strictly controlled by them, he said. India was the only country which did not ask for the names of persons who have deposited black money in foreign banks though Germany was willing to share the list. It was estimated that around $ 1.4 trillion was there in foreign banks and the government could bring it back, he said. Redemption of ‘Sanathana Dharma' in its modern forms can only save the country from the crisis. The country needs to achieve material progress as well as spiritual development for progress, he said. V.P. Ramachandran, president of the Centre, presented the media award to J. Gopikrishnan. Veteran journalists K.M. Roy, P. Rajan and Babu Joseph were among those who spoke.
