Minister releases book on Tamil literature

‘Language a treasure house of values'




IN GLORY OF TAMIL:S.N.M. Ubayathullah, State Commercial Taxes Minister, releasing a book in Pudukottai.

PUDUKOTTAI: A book on essays written by scholars and poets on various topics in Tamil literature was released at a three-day seminar on the ‘Contribution of Tamil language to Iyal, Isai and Natakam', organised by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai, and the Thilagavathiar Tiruvarul Adheenam, Pudukottai, here recently.

Dwelling into topics on ‘Iyatramizh', ‘bhakthi literature', ‘isai tamizh' and ‘Nataka tamizh', the book deals with a variety of subjects from ‘Ettu thogai' to ‘Silapathigaram' and from ‘Tirumanthiram' to ‘Tiruvasagam'.

The State Minister for Commercial Taxes S.N.M. Ubayathullah released the book. He said Tamil literature is a treasure house of values and appreciated the efforts taken by the Adheenam for releasing the book.

Dayananda Chandrasekaran, head of the Adheenam, who compiled the essays, said that 41 Tamil works, including ‘Pathu paattu', ‘Silapathigaram' had been notified as ‘classical literature' by the Institute. He also spoke on the impact of ‘Nataka tamizh' on Tamil language and its literature.

Every branch of Tamil was significant by itself. The objective of compiling the essays, he said, was to provide an opportunity for the Tamil-loving people to understand the rich treasure of information contained in every field.

Cultural programmes, musical concerts and discussions on different topics formed the other features of the programme. Specific sessions dealt with topics such as ‘ethics in Ettu Thogai'; ‘life of Tamils in ancient literature'; ‘gift of Tamil language to music'; and ‘gift of Tamil language to drama'.

S. V. Subramanian, founder of Ulaga Tamizh Iyakkam, said that Tamil literary works such as ‘Tirukkural' had brought about an eternal repute to the language.

A dance recital on ‘Tirumanthiram' ‘Thevaram', and songs sung by Bharathiar and Bharathidasan was another highlight. Narthagi Nataraj rendered a dance performance.
