Naxal boycott call makes little impact in south Orissa

Staff Reporter

No incidents of violence have been reported from any part

BERHAMPUR: The call given by Maoists to observe the Republic Day as a black day had little impact in south Orissa.

Naxalites put up black flags and posters to protest against the Republic Day celebration in some remote pockets of south Orissa. But, no incidents of violence were reported from any part. In some remote pockets, where there is Maoist presence, fear of violence was felt by residents. Security remained tight in all naxal-affected areas of south Orissa including Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Panic of Maoists disrupted life in Daringbadi, Simanbadi and Brahmanigaon areas of Kandhamal district. In these areas, Maoist activity has increased in recent weeks. As Maoists opposed the Republic Day celebration through posters a few days ago, panic gripped the area. Shops remained closed in these areas. In Ganjam, Maoists put up a poster ordering not to celebrate the Republic Day in front of a school at Bahadapadar near Bhanjanagar. Naxalites also pasted similar posters and a black flag at Loharklhandi bridge near Bhanjanagar.

In Koraput district flag hoisting for the Republic Day could not be held at schools at Edgumvalsa, Katulpeta and Esada villages of Bandhugaon block due to threat of naxalites. Maoists also put up black flags near the office of the Machkund hydel project and office of the workers' union at Onkadeli. But the workers preferred to dare the naxalites and celebrated the Republic Day there. No major naxal activity was reported from Rayagada, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts.
