Land for BSF camp to be handed over tomorrow

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Decks have been cleared for the district administration to hand over the documents of the 60 acres of land at Arekkarakunnu at Nadapuram to the Union Home Ministry for establishing a camp of the Border Security Force (BSF).

District Collector P.B. Salim told The Hindu that the function would be held with the participation of the State and Centre government officials on Friday. The Kerala High Court had earlier this week given clearance to the proposal vacating its earlier directive restricting the State government not to hand over the land at Nadapuram to the BSF.

The High Court had ordered the stay on the basis of a writ petition filed by M.M. George, hailing from Thalassery, staking claim to the land. However, the government moved a petition seeking to review the judgment. It was also pointed out that the government had already constructed a helipad for the purpose.

Officials said that the government had taken over the land as excess land in Vadakara taluk. It was part of the 273.93 acres of excess land in the possession of the government.

The Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim, Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom, Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran will take part in Friday's function.

Apart from handing over the 60 acre of land to the BSF, the district administration plans to allot five acres for setting up a Kendriya Vidyalaya. Besides this, 30 acres would be provided to the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and the Nadapuram Development Project.
