NIZAMABAD: Did the agitation for the separate Telangana impact even the cultural programmes staged by students of different schools on the Police Parade Grounds as part of the Republic Day celebrations here on Wednesday? The reply is an affirmative “yes”.

Notwithstanding, the programmes enthused all the spectators as they felt comfortable watching them. Because, unlike every year, this year the programmes were something special as they were largely Telangana oriented.

Important festivals in the region- ‘Bathukamma' and ‘Bonalu' occupied the centre stage in the cultural programmes presented on the occasion. Besides, the “peereelu” or “alams” played during the Moharram festival, which is popular in Telangana, was also staged by students. Girls holding branches of neem (azardirachta indica) and playing ‘hysterically' seemingly possessed by village Goddesses was another highlight of the programmes. This is generally seen in the ‘Bonalu' procession.

They were staged by students of the RBVRR High School who won laurels from the district Collector D. Varaprasad for their excellent performance.

Surprisingly, only four schools-SRDG High School, AP Residential School and Vijay High School took part in the cultural programmes this year. The Alluri Seetharamaraju play staged by the Vijay High School was also wonderful.
