‘Railway strives to upgrade passenger amenities'

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Railway Division has been striving to upgrade passenger amenities in stations for the benefit of the travelling public, Divisional Railway Manager P.V. Vaidialingam said on Wednesday.

Augmenting passenger amenities had been taken up as a main thrust area during the current year and works such as improvement in circulating area, lighting, platform surface, waiting and retiring rooms, and passenger guidance systems had been planned in all model stations in Tiruchi Division, Mr. Vaidialingam said, speaking at the Republic Day celebrations organised by the Railway Division here.

He said the Tiruchi Division witnessed a quantum jump in both passenger and goods earnings during the period from April to December in the current financial year. Broad gauge conversion work in the Villupuram – Katpadi section had been completed and was awaiting certification from the Commissioner of Railway Safety for operation of passenger rail services.

He said gauge conversion works from Tiruvarur to Karaikudi and between Tiruthuraipoondi and Agastiyampalli would be taken up shortly. With the electrification of Villupuram – Tiruchi chord line section, the travel time between Chennai and Tiruchi was bound to come down at Villupuram.

Mr.Vaidialingam said the punctuality of express trains was 73 per cent, while it was 91.7 per cent in the case of passenger trains.
