Mayor M. Subramanian hoisting the national flag at Ripon Building on Wednesday. CHENNAI: Unfurling of the national flag, events to celebrate the cultural diversity, presentation of awards and honours marked the Republic Day in the city on Wednesday. Mayor M. Subramanian hoisted the tricolour at Ripon Building. He distributed Rs.6,000 each to 11 beneficiaries under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme and Rs.3.1 lakh to 14 beneficiaries under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Assistance Scheme. Two women SHGs received Rs.70,000 each under SJSRY. Three employees of the Chennai Corporation received cash awards for their contribution towards using Tamil in official communication and files. Chennai Primary School, Thiruvanmiyur received an award for its role in creating awareness tree plantation and conservation of nature. Chennai Middle School, Arumbakkam and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur also received awards for similar activities. Students of Chennai Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam, were honoured for receiving second prize in cultural competition from Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. A total of 24 employees of various departments were honoured for exemplary work. Triplicane Zone received the award for collection of property tax. Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan was present. At Pallavan House, Transport Secretary Rameshram Mishra hoisted the national flag. Bus conductors S. Rathnasamy and S. Dayalan were honoured for displaying honesty at work. A total of 51 drivers received prizes for contributing towards increasing fuel efficiency and 25 conductors received prizes. MTC Managing Director V. Babu participated. Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation A.S. Jeevarathinam hoisted the national flag and planted saplings at its office on College Road. At Sri Ramachandra University, Vice-Chancellor S. Rangaswami hoisted the national flag. At Sevalaya, a blood donation camp was organised on the occasion of Republic Day. A cultural programme was organised by students.
