St. Mar Abo festival begins on Sunday

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The annual Saint Mar Abo festival of the Thevalakara Marthamariyam Orthodox Syrian Church near here will be held from January 30 to February 8.

Parish priest Fr. John T. Varghese said that Mar Abo, who hailed from Nineveh in the erstwhile Persia, reached Kollam during the eighth century and rebuilt the Tharissa church using the special privileges accorded by the then ruler of Kulashekarapuram.

The original Tharissa chursh is believed to have been established by Saint Thomas the Apostle. That church later got destroyed by a severe storm.

Mar Abo had also established churches at places including Kadamattam, Kayamkulam and Niranom. The renowned Kadamattathu Kathanar is believed to be a disciple of Mar Abo.

The festival will begin with a procession from the Padinjarekara Saint Gregorios chapel carrying the festival flag. The flag will be hoisted at 5.30 p.m. by the parish priest and will be followed by vespers.

As part of the festival, a programme to spread awareness against drug addiction and alcoholism will be held on February 1.

Convention

The festival convention will be inaugurated at 7 p.m. on February 2 by Thomas Mar Athanasius, Metropolitan of the Kandanad East diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Mathews Mar Timithios, Metropolitan of the Canada, U.K. and Europe diocese, will inaugurate the annual meeting of the spirituals organisations of the Malakanara Orthodox Syrian Church.
