Shashwathi Nanjanagudu Tirumalamba awards presented to four writers

Bangalore: “The hard work and conviction of women like Nanjanagudu Tirumalamba now puts women on a par with men. I feel extremely honoured to receive this award,” said noted writer Nayantara Sahgal.

Ms. Sahgal was speaking after receiving the Bangalore-based Rashtriya Sikshana Samithi Trust's prestigious Shashwathi Nanjanagudu Tirumalamba national award for 2008 in recognition of her contribution to Indian languages and literature here on Friday.

Ms. Sahgal, daughter of the late Vijaylakshmi Pandit, said that in contrast to the bygone days, the present social ambience was friendly to women. The sufferings and predicament of women in the old days were now beyond imagination, and the future of women would appear to be secure.

The trust also presented the award to writers Sushma Kulshreshtha (Sanskrit studies), Uma Maheshwari (Tamil literature) and Sughra Mehdi (in absentia) for Urdu literature for 2007, 2009 and 2010 respectively. The award carries a citation, a purse of Rs. 40,000 and a memento (an icon of Kamadhenu) each. Besides the national award, the trust presented the Sadodita Award for research and social work, the Karnataka Kalpavalli Award for a woman social activist in Karnataka and the Gargi Award to a woman teacher for the year 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Sadodita Award, instituted by the trust and an endowment established on the occasion of the 66th birthday of the former Chief Minister late Ramakrishna Hegde, was given to R. Indira (Mysore), K. Leela (Bangalore), Chaya Degaonkar (Gulbarga) and Padma Shekhar (Mysore).

The award carries a citation and a purse of Rs. 20, 000 each. Dharwad's Sharada Gopala Dabade, Bangalore's Du. Saraswathi, Hassan's Roopa Hassan and Harohalli's Nagarathna Banadakoppa were honoured with the Karnataka Kalpavalli Award.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 20, 000 and a citation each.

The Gargi Award, instituted by the trust and faculty members of the NMKRV College for Women, in memory of the first principal of the college C.N. Mangala, was presented to Malathi (Bangalore), M.C. Pankaja (Bangalore), S. Vijayamma (Tumkur) and B.M. Shylaja (Chitradurga).

The award carries a citation and a purse of Rs. 10,000. The distinguished English writer, Shashi Deshpande, was the chief guest. Vice-Chancellor of Sanskrit University, Bangalore, Mallepuram G. Venkatesh, was the chief guest.

The president of the trust, M.K. Panduranga Setty, presided over the event.
