Nitish government went soft on Naxals to win polls: RJD

Shoumojit Banerjee

Patna: The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Friday alleged that the ruling NDA government in Bihar had “deliberately gone soft on Naxals to win the [recent Assembly] elections.”

Addressing journalists here, Leader of the Opposition and RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui accused the Nitish Kumar-led government of laxity in probing the 2005 killing of the then Munger Superintendent of Police, K.C. Surendra Babu, and five police personnel in a Naxal ambush at Sonarwa in Munger.

He alleged that witnesses were intimidated or made to turn hostile. Most of the witnesses, who were police personnel, did not turn up for questioning. The government, instead, attempted to frame an innocent person, the RJD leader alleged.

Referring to sessions case no. 331/2007 (State of Bihar Vs. Rajkumar Das), Mr. Siddiqui said that even the judge had noted irregularities in the inquest process after cross-examining the witness. The judge had pointed to “the inability of the investigating officer to record the confessional statement of any of the accused during the course of the investigation.”

It could only be that the government either wanted to protect the criminals or aid the Naxals, Mr. Siddiqui alleged. “Why was the NDA government not bothered to move the High Court despite the sessions judge raising questions over the shoddy investigation process?”
