ERODE: The construction of a flyover at the Government Hospital (GH) junction, implementation of the 80 Feet Road and Ring Road projects, and the removal of encroachments on the roadsides were some of the important issues highlighted at a discussion and an awareness meeting organised by the Erode City People's Society for Development here on Saturday.

The meeting was organised with the objective of bringing people from all sections of society together, list important infrastructural needs of the town and urge the civic body and authorities concerned to initiate appropriate steps to fulfil public demands.

Almost all the participants in the meeting said that a proper flyover at the GH Road junction was the urgent infrastructural need of the town. The junction witnesses traffic snarls every day and the police are finding it very difficult to regulate vehicle movement.

The government has currently planned to construct an elliptical-shape roundabout at this busy GH Junction.

But many speakers in the meeting have opposed this idea and claimed that the construction of a proper flyover will be an effective solution to de-congest the area.

The meeting also wanted the civic body to implement the 80 Feet Road project immediately.

The 80 Feet Road, which was conceived years ago, starts from opposite Corporation building, goes through a private institution and touches Chennimalai Road near the Railway Station.

The implementation of this project would reduce the traffic congestion on the Perundurai Road and EVN Road to a great extent, people pointed out.

People also wanted the Corporation to implement the 60 Feet Road project, which connects the Perundurai Road and the Chennimalai Road. Similarly steps should be initiated for the formation of a ring road for the town.

The other major demand of the participants was the removal of encroachments on both sides of the roads.

Rampant encroachments on the roadsides were one of the major reasons for traffic snarls in the town, they pointed out. Other demands put forward during the meeting included adequate public convenience facilities, shifting of transformers on the main roads to inner parts and a separate bus stand for town buses at Panneerselvam Park.

Society President K. Kailasapathi presided.
