Sarath Kumar urges Centre to retrieve Katchatheevu

Staff Reporter

R. Sarathkumar, actor and Samuthuva Makkal Katchi president and cadres staging a protest in Nagapattinam on Friday.

NAGAPATTINAM: The Akila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi cadre led by its chief Sarath Kumar took to the streets here on Friday to record its opposition to the attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Calling upon the government to retrieve Katchatheevu, the actor-tuned-politician said that securing the islet back into its fold would be the first step towards redeeming the condition of the fishermen.

Mr. Sarath Kumar demanded that coastal surveillance by the Indian Navy be augmented to ensure such attacks were curbed. He also demanded that the Sri Lankan government bring to book naval personnel who perpetrated such atrocities.

The kin of the victims should be provided with employment with the State or the Central government. According to Mr. Sarath Kumar, it was high time the Congress-led Central government started considering Tamil fishermen as Indian fishermen and responded to the situation.
