Next-gen choppers within 3 years

Special Correspondent

SALEM: “A breed of next-generation lightweight choppers from the stables of Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) will fly out within three years to provide air surveillance for law-enforcing agencies in major cities and in a decade for monitoring the national highways,” said Ashok Nayak, Chairman, HAL, Bangalore.

“We will custom-make these machines and supply to the agencies,” he told the media here after inaugurating a new factory, ‘Salem Aeropark' of aerospace engineers, manufacturers of aerospace precision components, at Ammampalayam near here, on Saturday.

While pointing out that HAL had a ‘high order book' from leading global clients, Mr. Nayak said that it had recorded sales worth about Rs.12,500 crore this year, which would go up to Rs.13,800 crore next year. With vast experience and sustained quality research back-up from DRDO, the aircraft division, both civil and military, he said, was today bidding for a substantial share in the international aeronautical market.

“As the industry is growing and the demand is hard to meet, HAL has started encouraging outsourcing both in production and technical areas.” The project on unmanned aircrafts with a target of producing 8 to 10 machines was going on, Mr. Nayak added.

Managing Director (Helicopter Division), HAL, P. Soundararajan said ‘Dhruv,' an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) multi-mission machine fully designed and developed by HAL, was in high demand. It was a much sought-after machine in countries such as Ecuador and Nepal and also in India in the Lakshadweep islands.

Saying that the aviation industry was at present garnering a mere 5 per cent share in total aviation, Mr. Soundararajan was optimistic that it would soar up to 25 per cent in another 10 years.

K. Tamilmani, Scientist, DRDO, pointed out that HAL was on the job of producing 200 more aircrafts after the smooth induction of Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft, into the Indian Air Force. The successful manufacture of Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) had also provided a fillip to the industry. R. Sundaram, Chief Executive, Aerospace Engineers, presided over the inaugural function. Later, they also inspected the factory where the precision equipment is being manufactured.
