Salary of guest lecturers will be hiked: Acharya

Udupi: Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya said on Saturday that the State Government had decided to increase the salaries of guest lecturers in government colleges to Rs. 10,000 a month from April 1.

Addressing presspersons here after the tri-monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting, Dr. Acharya said that since past three years, the guest lecturers were being paid Rs. 5,000 a month.

On issues concerning Udupi district, the Minister said that the Agumbe Ghat road would be widened. It would be made a four-lane road. A sum of Rs. 120 crore had been released to widen the road. A road would be constructed to connect National Highway 17 and National Highway 13 in the district.

A proposal for Rs. 2.11 crore had been sent to the State Government for the repair of major district roads and those belonging to the Public Works Department. Priority was being given to filling potholes on roads in the district, he said.

It had been decided to provide sites to 10,672 poor people in the district. The district administration had identified 38 acres of land for this purpose in the three taluks of the district. The power situation in Udupi district had improved after Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) started generating and providing10 million units of power. A proposal had been prepared to construct a drainage system in the Manipal-Santhekatte area at an estimated cost of Rs. 60 crore. Small bridges would be constructed to provide better connectivity to Jansale and Hermunde villages in the district as houses of Asian Games medal winners Ashwini Shetty and Mamatha Shetty were there, Dr. Acharya said.
