Officials hold talks with association leaders


VISAKHAPATNAM: Fishermen and boat operators on Saturday laid siege to the office of Joint Director (fisheries) in protest against inordinate delay in releasing amount received for disbursement to towards diesel subsidy.

AP Mechanised Boat Operators' Association and Dolphin Boat Operators Welfare Association gave the call to lay siege to the office and observe a bandh of Fishing Harbour alleging that an amount of Rs.24 lakh received by the JD's office was lying idle for nearly six months.

After three-hour protest, JD Sudarshan and Assistant Director Swarna Kumari held talks with P.Ch. Appa Rao and Ch. Satyanarayana Murthy, leaders of the two associations, and cleared the file for disbursement to all the eligible boat operators.

Earlier, the One Town Police deployed its force to prevent law and order problem. The slogan-shouting fishermen and boat operators on the advice of the police later agreed to take part in discussion with the fisheries officials.

Mr. Murthy said as of now, Rs.22 crore was due from the Centre and Rs.5 crore from the State for reimbursement towards diesel to the boat operators. He said they were facing severe hardship due to inordinate delay in release of the amount.
