BJP retains power in Bellary ZP

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: The Bharatiya Janata Party has retained power in the Bellary Zilla Panchayat for the second successive term.

Its members, Aruna Thippareddy representing Korlagundi constituency in Bellary taluk and Chenna Basavanagouda from Gajapur constituency, have been elected president and vice-president of the zilla panchayat respectively. The BJP has 18 seats in the 36-member panchayat. However, the party secured the support of Congress member Nagarathnamma from Halekote in Siruguppa taluk within 24 hours of the announcement of the poll results.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's cause was also helped by the unexpected support of Saraswati, the lone Janata Dal (S) member from Hatcholli in Siruguppa taluk.

As a result, Ms. Thippareddy and Mr. Basavanagouda secured 20 votes to the 16 polled by Congress nominees Pushpa and Sashidhar. Rajaneesh Goel, Regional Commissioner, conducted the election. Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Muthaiah and Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj were present.
