Nedumbassery: Officials investigating the security lapse at the Kochi airport on Republic Day have found that the consignment which evaded screening at the cargo complex contained more than one chemical that come under the classification of dangerous goods. “On detailed examination, the consignment was found to have contained boxes with bottles of hydrochloric acid and boric acid, among various other non- dangerous chemicals,” said airport director A.C.K.Nair. The chemical carton that had made its way into a Kingfisher aircraft six months ago was also reported to have contained packets of boric acid powder, apart from two 100 ml bottles of liquid detergent. Airport sources said the consignment carrying laboratory equipment, comprising nine varieties of chemicals and samples, had already been sent to the analytical laboratory for a forensic test to confirm whether these materials belonged to the dangerous goods category. “A case has been registered against the shipper for negligence in handling hazardous substances on the complaints lodged by the airport and its security wing and any further progress in the investigation can be made only on getting these test results,” an official said. Though CIAL stated that the consignment was accepted on the basis of a wrong declaration by the shipper, experts pointed out the incident as a major security lapse as it violated the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation for the safe transport of hazardous materials by air.
