Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The 700-odd house surgeons in the five government medical colleges, who had launched an indefinite strike demanding better working conditions, regulated duty hours and enhanced stipend, have decided to intensify their strike. The house surgeons launched their agitation on January 27, close on the heels of an indefinite strike launched by PG medicos, who also demanded better stipend and reduction in course fee. The combined boycott of hospital duties by both the PG medicos and the house surgeons had crippled the medical college hospital services. Though the PG medicos withdrew their strike on Friday following talks with Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, the house surgeons were still undecided about whether to continue their strike. They had on Friday submitted a memorandum of their demands to the Health Minister. They decided to intensify their strike as the Minister refused to give them any promise, even though she said that their demands would be considered . As part of intensifying their strike, house surgeons will boycott all hospital duties, including casualty, ICU and labour room services, from Sunday.
