Anganwadi workers seek better deal
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: A large number of anganwadi workers staged a protest at C.N.R. Rao Circle here on Friday, demanding better salaries and enhanced compensation packages for those retiring from service this year.
Organised by the Karnataka State Anganwadi Workers Union, the Statewide protest demanded that salaries, usually referred to as ‘honorarium', of anganwadi workers and helpers be increased from Rs. 2,500 and Rs. 1,250, respectively, to Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 4,000. They pointed out that in Tamil Nadu, anganwadi workers were being paid Rs. 5,000.
They said that while officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare had agreed in principle to their demand, the Government was dragging its feet on it. They also demanded that retirement compensation be increased.
