Demand to allow toddy tapping

Staff Reporter

KARUR: The State government should not delay any further in removing the 23-year-old ban on toddy tapping as the Election Commission has indicated the announcement of State Assembly elections schedule by March 1, S. Nallasamy, Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement Coordinator, said here on Saturday.

Detailing the resolutions passed at a meeting of the Movement, Mr. Nallasamy said his organisation would support the stir planned by Tamil Nadu Milk Producers' Cooperative Union to stop supply of milk to Aavin pending hike in procurement prices. He also said all industries causing pollution should be closed forthwith and a permanent solution be found for ending industrial pollution. It was wrong to support export units saying they were earning precious foreign exchange when they were causing irreparable damage to very existence and livelihood.

Solution

Permanent solution to the pollution issue plaguing rivers Amaravathy, Noyyal and Kalingarayan Channel in Karur, Tirupur and Erode districts should be found instead of proposing unworkable plans such as taking the effluents to be dumped in sea.

Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam Karur district president M. Marappan, Organiser of the Movement L. Kadiresan, and secretary, Lower Bhavani Project Aycutdars Association, R. Thangaraju, were present.
